Error with sitemap.xml creation
« on: January 08, 2007, 02:14:56 AM »
Hello,

We purchased the generator today for the first time and followed all the instructions - specially about those related to permissions.

What we are finding is that the generator will create the following files no problem, except for sitemap.xml and we are having difficulty understanding why that one file is not being generated in the public_html/ directory.

sitemap.html, sitemap.xml.gz, ror.xml

We did create the sitemap.xml file first, set its permissions, ran the crawler.  The only file that did not get created or updated was the sitemap.xml file the others listed above were correct within the public_html directory.

I think we're missing something, but we cannot seem to identify what it is.  Can anyone help?

Thanks and much appreciated.

Hello,

We have not received a response on this thread, so we have continued to try and figure this out with the permissions, re-creating, deleting the sitemap.xml file and nothing seems to be working.  All we see is that the other 3 files are created EXCEPT for the sitemap.xml

Why would this be?

Hello,

One other thing I forgot to mention. We did search the forum for "sitemap creation" to see what else folks have posted, however, there are only 3 or 4 results, one of them is us and the other 3 are unrelated to our problem.

Any assistance would be appreciated.  please let us know more information is needed.

Thanks.

Hello,

you should manually create empty sitemap.xml file and set permissions accordingly to it, then start sitemap generation.

Hello,

We tried this before and just tried it again too.

First deleted sitemap.xml
Create emtpy sitemap.xml
CHMOD sitemap.xml to  666
Run Crawler

All other files are created no problem, BUT the sitemap.xml  Any further thoughts?

Thanks.

Please let me know your generator URL in private message so that I can check that.

Thank you kindly for looking into this.  We have sent a private message with the necessary information.  Depending upon your findings, perhaps you could post here for others to see too?

Thanks.

An update:

gzip compression was enabled in sitemap generator options, so correct xml sitemap URL in this case is:
[ External links are visible to logged in users only ]

Hi,

Thank you for this confirmation. You know this is an interesting situation.  In the free version on the website it generates both sitemap.xml as well as sitemap.xml.gz  We expected our purchased version would do the same.  We appreciate your letting us know, but hopefully you can understand why we even started this trouble report.

Thanks.

Yes, since you only need one sitemap version to submit to google, generator doesn't create both of them. On the other hand, online generator doesn't have an option to enable/disable compression, so both versions are created and user then decides which one to use (again, there is no need in having both of them at the same time).
