sitemap.xml v sitemap.xml.gz - should i delete sitemap.xml?

HI,
I have 40,000 pages on my site and have been generating sitemap.xml files for a year. I have now started generated sitemap.xml.gz instead. Both types of file now exist on my server. Should I delete the sitemap.xml files?
Many thanks,
Graham

Yes, you should remove it since it will contain aoutdated information now.

Is old sitemap.xml packed automatically to sitemap.xml.gz when there is a new sitemap.xml generated?

Are you referring to online generator service? Every time you run generator, both xml and xml.gz sitemaps are updated.

Thanks. I have thought that sitemap.xml.gz is a backup of an old sitemap - but it would have no sense of course.
