I searched for Magento and got no posts returned so I though I might save someone time in the future.
My problem was - cannot save config and crawl redirects to generator homepage.
The solution, which I found on this board, was to create a .htaccess file in the ROOT GENERATOR folder containing the statement "RewriteEngine off".
On Unix the properties for the .htaccess file is 644.
