multiple sitemap files?

If I put index page = 5000 pages, it will generate a single sitemap file.

but if put index page = 10,000 pages, it will generator multiple sitemap files, it looks like it will automatically break them up, is this done on purpose, for what reason?

you should enter a number as 10000 (without a comma delimiter).
